English Roast Dinner

We all look forward to a good English roast dinner. Everyone sits around the table with some roasted meats, vegetables, roast potatoes, stuffing, yorkshire puddings and oodles of gravy. Everyone is happy and then comes the desert...followed by a snooze!

A roast dinner originated in Britain.Typical meats used for a roast dinner are chicken, lamb, pork, or roast beef, although seasonally duck, goose, gammon, turkey may be used.

Every household has their own version of the perfect roast dinner and opinions can vary  on which meats, vegetables and side dishes should be included.

This is what  a classic English roast dinner consists of and more than half of us love tucking into a roast dinner each week

Beef
Carrots
Cauliflower
Broccoli
Roast potatoes
Stuffing
1-2 Yorkshire Puddings
Lashings of gravy
Sauces

Beef is the meat that reigns supreme as a favourite roast dinner centrepiece. Lamb is second, followed by chicken. Carrots came out  at the top when it comes to vegetables followed by cauliflower, broccoli, sprouts and peas while cabbage, turnip, kale and sweetcorn came bottom of the list.

Home is where the heart is when it comes to eating and cooking a tasty roast rather than eating out in a restaurant.

Here are some TIPS to help you cook a delicious roast meal.

Always bring the meat to room temperature before putting it into a preheated oven, as this will ensure an even cook. If you're doing a roast chicken, get the perfect crispy chicken skin by patting the skin dry before cooking, rubbing with salt to draw out moisture and avoiding basting during cooking.

After cooking, always rest the meat before carving.

Roast potatoes were named the number one essential item for a roast dinner (ahead of even gravy) so getting them perfectly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside can make or break our favourite roast meal.

Mashed potatoes are a middle of the road option with the majority of people saying they can take or leave them.

Foe roast potatoes, you can score your parboiled potatoes, or toss them around in the colander to rough them up a bit, and others dust them in flour or semolina for extra crispness.

Another idea is roasting new potatoes whole, with lemon wedges and olive oil. It means you don’t have to peel them first.

Lay the table early and well before serving time.

Don’t forget to put salt, pepper and any cold sauces on the table

If you’re putting hot dishes on the table use heat-proof place mats

You may want to warm your plates in the oven for a minute before serving, this will help to stop the veggies going cold as quickly,

Then its time to enjoy this English firm favoiurte bringing thousands of families and friends together.
